| NEED IMAGE | American | 10 | 11 | G | N | * | * | RARE | SIZE:
S: Small - 2-5 lbs. M: Medium - 5-7 lbs. L: Large - 7-10 lbs. G: Giant - 10+ lbs. FUR: N: Normal - can be short up to 1 1/2 inch W: Wool - different levels of density-all need grooming. S: Satin - transparent hair shell R: Rex - Short plush-like GROOM: * Minimal Grooming ** Need grooming 2+ times a week *** Need almost daily grooming BEGINNING BREED: These rabbits have a great personality for a first time owner. Please be advised that these breeds are not necessarily easy to care for (for example the Angora has a great personality, but requires daily grooming) ACTIVITY LEVEL: * Relaxed, Easy going ** Curious, Friendly *** Excitable, very active TOP 10: Some of the most popular breeds registered with the ARBA (American Rabbit Breeders Association). These breeds should be easy to find. BEHAVIOR: Sniffing: Checking you out Begging: Want food. Stomping: Warning of danger or scared. Teeth grinding: Content. Grunt: Anger Bunny hop: Happy bunny Playing: Pushing around objects and running. Scream: Hurt Circling and nipping feet: Usually by females in heat. OTHER: *Rabbits should be spayed/neutered. Un-spayed females can be territorial. *Rabbits have strong urine. Litter boxes should be changed daily. There are commercial additives that can be added to the drinking water to reduce acidity. *Rabbits are better kept housed separate if possible. Larger cages can be used for more than one, but should be either siblings or raised together. *Allow at least an hour out of cage each day. *Needs items to gnaw on. *Nails need to be cut. *Handling: Do not pick up by the ears. The spine is very fragile, so pick up from the back supporting supporting chest and hind legs against the body. HOUSING: S-M 24" x 36" L-G 30" x 36" Generally the cage should be 4X the size of the rabbit or a two level condo. Flooring: Wire (1/2" x 1/2") or solid for smaller rabbits. For rabbits over 10 lbs solid floor only. Bedding: Wood shavings or shredded newspaper. NO CEDAR or PINE shavings. Litter box: Put litter box where rabbit usually goes to the bathroom. Rabbit will always go in the same corner of cage or house (if allowed to roam). OUTDOOR HOUSING: Rabbits tolerate cold more than heat, but should be kept out of drafty areas. Please research requirements for keeping rabbits outdoors before investing in a hutch and assuming the rabbit will be kept outside. HEALTH: Osteomyelitis: infection in the bone. Teeth malocclusion Hairballs Bacterial infections Wool Block: Ingesting of wool (angoras). Diarrhea Red urine: Usually normal HEALTH WARNINGS: Amoxicillon or penicillin based drugs can be fatal. Surgeries: DO NOT fast before surgery. Rabbits cannot throw up, so this is not a danger as with other animals. |
